Overview

Organic food is food which is produced using environmentally and animal friendly farming methods on organic farms. These methods are legally defined and any food sold as ‘organic’ must be strictly regulated. Organic standards are the rules and regulations that define how an organic product must be made. Organic standards for food are laid down in European Union (EU) law. Anything labelled ‘organic’ that is for human consumption must meet these standards as a minimum. The standards cover all aspects of food production.

Organic meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products come from animals that are given no antibiotics or growth hormones. Organic food is produced without using most conventional pesticides; fertilizers made with synthetic ingredients or sewage sludge; bioengineering; or ionizing radiation.
